INDIANAPOLIS – The 2017 rookie class for the Colts will be pivotal in shaping the future of this franchise.

How has the group performed so far in 2017?

  • OLB-Tarell Basham (3rd round pick): One tackle. That is the NFL stat line in five career games for Basham. The Colts are not holding back in assessing Basham early on. They need to see more out of their young pass rusher. “He’s not where he needs to be,” is what GM Chris Ballard said earlier this month. It’s still very, very early, but if the Colts do not see strides from Basham in 2017, pass rusher becomes an even bigger need next offseason.

  • C-Deyshawn Bond (Undrafted free agent): Bond should be more than commended for what he gave the Colts in 2017. Unfortunately, a torn quad has him him sidelined for the rest of the year. Bond was a UDFA who was thrust into the starting lineup when Ryan Kelly was hurt during the start of the preseason. The diminutive Bond (6-1 and 299 pounds) showed enough that makes you think he can provide future depth along the OL.

  • TE-Darrell Daniels (Undrafted free agent): The Washington product has played quite a bit as a reserve tight end. Mainly used as a blocker, Daniels has two catches in five games. Several draft pundits expected to see Daniels hear his name called last April. The Colts have benefited from finding this UDFA.

  • CB-Nate Hairston (5th round pick): Hairston has easily been one of the early surprises from the 2017 rookie class. Despite having just two years of cornerback experience in college, Hairston is the team’s starting nickel cornerback. Opponents have not tested Hairston too much in coverage. The rookie corner does have two sacks, both coming off slot blitzes.

  • WR-Krishawn Hogan (Undrafted free agent): The local product saw his 2017 season come to an end on Sunday. A torn ACL sent Hogan to injured reserve. Hogan played in two games for the Colts, after his hometown team signed him to the practice squad following an offseason with the Arizona Cardinals.

  • S-Malik Hooker (1st round pick): It’s been a healthy start to the regular season for Hooker and he’s already displayed those coveted ball skills. Hooker has three interceptions, which places him second in the NFL rankings through five games. After an offseason of injury concerns, Hooker’s good health to start 2017 has been vital in the Colts improving their takeaways.

  • RB-Marlon Mack (4th round pick): The Colts finally have a game-breaker at the running back position. Mack already has three runs of more than 20 yards this year. Last year, the Colts’ running backs combined for one run of more than 20 yards all year. Mack gives this offense a jolt of playmaking that has been beyond needed.

  • CB-Kenny Moore II (Undrafted free agent): After spending the offseason with the Patriots, Moore has mainly been a special teams player for the Colts. Moore, who played collegiately at Valdosta State, has been active for all five games, but has yet to record a tackle.

  • P-Rigobertro Sanchez (Undrafted free agent): What a find in needing a replacement for the great Pat McAfee. The 13 punts inside the 20 for Sanchez are the most in the NFL. He ranks sixth in net punting average at 44.2 yards per punt, thanks to a tremendous job of directional punting.

  • DT-Grover Stewart (4th round pick): Rotational reps along the defensive line have been the early work for Stewart. The former Division II player has seen action in four games, with just one tackle on the stat sheet.

  • ILB-Anthony Walker (5th round pick): A nagging hamstring injury has really hampered the Northwestern product. Walker has played in just two games, with the hamstring not allowing him to finish either contest. Special teams action is the only playing time Walker has received so far.

  • CB-Quincy Wilson (3rd round pick): After a strong starting debut in Week Two, a knee injury then sidelined Wilson. Back to full health, Wilson is now in a bit of a logjam at the cornerback position. Even in limited action, the Colts have to love what Wilson put on tape in looking at the future of the Indy secondary.

Fourth-round pick Zach Banner was cut at the end of the preseason. The offensive tackle from USC is on Cleveland’s 53-man roster.
