Veteran linebacker Junior Galette remains one of the most high-profile pass rushing options still available on the free agent market. But as it turns out, the fact that he remains unsigned is an active choice on his part.
Galette explains in a post on Instagram that he has standing offers from three teams, but he is holding off on signing because he’s having second thoughts about continuing his NFL career.
“The real reason I haven’t signed is because I’ve contemplated retiring,” Galette wrote. “I have 3 Deals Currently on the table and will Plan Accordingly. All my fans i promise this will be my Best I’m not saying nothing else.”
Galette, 30, spent last season with the Washington Redskins, where he had three sacks and 20 total tackles as a rotational part of their pass rush. It was a decent season considering he had missed the past two years due to back-to-back torn Achilles injuries. Prior to his stint with the Redskins, he racked up 31.5 sacks over a four-year span with the New Orleans Saints.
The Oakland Raiders had brought Galette in for a free-agent visit a couple months ago and could be one of the three teams who have supposedly offered him a deal. The Cleveland Browns were also reportedly interested in his services upon his departure from D.C.
Galette showed last season with Washington that he could still be a meaningful contributor for a team looking for more pass rushing help. But after the significant injuries he’s already suffered in his football career, no one should begrudge him for at least considering the prospect of retirement even at a relatively young age.
